Parkinson's Activities for the month of September in the Anchorage Area

With Winter on its way we need distraction from dwelling on the coming cold and dark! What better distraction could there be than Parkinson's Disease? The diversion kicks off Monday, September 14 at 1:00 pm. with a telehealth interactive broadcast. The subject will be "The benefits of Tai Chi for everyone" taught by Kaiya Treffry - Instructor for ACT 2. To find the Alaska meeting proceed with all deliberate speed to Providence Hospital oncology wing on Piper St. ( Go to the second floor, walk down the lonnnnnnnng hall that stretches South from the cafe and look for room 2401 pretty much at the end of the hall on your right.
As for our regular support group meeting, the magic eight ball says it's on for Saturday the 19th of September, but details beyond that are hazy. The Northwest chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association had been talking about staging a small conference for us on that day, but I haven't heard from them for awhile. Details as they emerge from the inky depths of the eight ball. To be continued...

This just in from the eight ball, it turns out that I weill have to miss this meeting, as I will be up in Denali Park, driving the road with a lottery winner. I encourage people to meet anyway and discuss their PD concerns with one another.

August Alaska Parkinson's Calendar

August is here. If, like me, you still have Parkinson's Disease, you may be interested in the following...

Monday, August 8, 2011 A Parkinson's Telehealth Seminar on Bone Health and PD with Dr. Lynn Kohlmeir. Look for this event in room 2401 at 1:00 p.m. in the Providence oncology wing. Go to the second floor walk down the lonnnnnnnng hall that stretches South from the cafe and look for room 2401 pretty much at the end of the hall. We will have our regular meeting on the 20th, fifth floor of the Pioneer home, 3:30, subject to be announced.

I also would like to bring your attention to The Alaska Parkinson's Page on facebook. This is an effort to create a place where people who are not able to take advantage of our support group can have a virtual support group on the internet. If you know of people who live out of town, or simply can't get to meetings for whatever reason, please point them to This page

I would be happy to have suggestions on what to include there, so check it out and chime in.

Get outside while it's not raining!

Our guest will be juggler Jim Kerr, who will provide us with tips on balance. That's Jim in the clip above juggling fire, and the background music is also Jim, conjuring up musical fire. You can see that this will be a meeting you won't want to miss!

On January 10 there will be a telehealth presentation at Providence hospital called "Take charge of your medications". Look for this event in room 2401 at 1:00 p.m.

Best to each of you in 2011,

October in Parkinson's: What's Brewing

The daylight hours are growing shorter. Ok, you didn't need me to tell you that. But maybe you'll prick up your ears at this: The Northwest Parkinson's Foundation will favor us with another interactive Telehealth presentation that may be viewed live in room 2401 at Providence Hospital's new cancer wing. The date will be October 11th, the time 1:00pm. The topic will be Addictions, Compulsions and Prioritization with Parkinson's. For more info, call 1-877-980-7500. For a wrap-up of the last Telehealth confererence, look here.

For our October 16th meeting, I plan to give a sneak preview of the speech I have been invited to give at the Hope Conference in Seattle this November. I was asked to provide a patient's point of view and I came up with a multi-media presentation called "Homemade Hope". I'll be looking for your feedback to make this as successful a presentation as possible. Again, the date is October 16, 3:30 in the afternoon at the Pioneer home.

Thanks,

Peter
